Slam Right Back Part II: Sons Of Ra / Town And Country Club, Leeds
Leigh, the singer in Novacain, got a job for British Steel after we left school. Knowing that he was in a band, one his colleagues gave him free tickets to a show he was performing at the Town And Country Club in July, and we decided that we'd all go down for a Novacain group outing.
The T and C was a fairly big place, but it was totally dead when we got there. The night had been put on by Leeds City Council and featured a weird mix of the interesting and the bizarre. I seem to remember that Inder 'Goldfinger' Matharu (more famous for being percussionist with Ian Brown's solo bands) was in one of the better acts, who played in a kind of Asian/Soul music style. Unfortunately they were very much the exception, with (not very good) dancers, and worthy, but dull/crap/dull and crap bands making the bar a far attractive proposition than the supposed entertainment.
Leigh's mate hadn't told him what he was actually going to be doing at the show, so we were all pretty surprised when it turned out that he was in a boyband! (who may, or may not, have been called 'Sons Of Ra') Our gobs were well and truly smacked as they wheeled out all the clichés. Sitting on a stool: check. All wearing the same black/grey clothes: check. Key changes: check.
By the end of the night we were all absolutely mullered, and things started to get messy. Leigh had a conversation with his mate after his boyband had finished and I dropped a plastic pint glass on his head from the balcony. Bit harsh, but it seemed funny at the time. We couldn't stop laughing, and the near-empty venue gave us plenty of opportunity for further mischief making.
We all got backstage and ransacked the dressing rooms, throwing feather boas and hats into the air. Somehow Leigh, Mike and Sug actually got on stage for the last song, and ran around the performers, being chased by the slow-on-the-uptake bouncers.
We managed to escape their clutches and regrouped at Leigh's car outside. His girlfriend had stayed sober through all this, which I can't imagine was a lot of fun. She drove us home with me in the boot and the rest of the band screaming "No-Cain" at random passers by. Amazeballs.
